Hi all, the 2018 sailing programme has a few changes. We are going to have some race training on some of the Lazy sailing sessions and we have added a few weekend flotillas to allow sailors to have a chance to sail further down the river with Safety boat cover.

We start the season with the Tune Up Series for Fast and Slow handicap dinghies; a good series with 2 back to back Races a day to get your sailing skills honed and it’s nice to get out sailing again after the winter break. Following that series are the Spring Points, Evening Points, Autumn Points and the Winter Series finishing in December. You get discards on race series, on a 4 race series you get 1 discard and a 6 race series you get 2 discards allowing you to miss a race or two and still complete the series.

On May the 13th from 10 am onwards we have a Navigation Race which allows competitors to choose their own start times to make the most of wind and tide. There will be turning marks near Methersgate, Martlesham Creek and Wilford Bridge. This is our only Race where we go up river so it’s a good opportunity to sail somewhere different.

Woodbridge Regatta this year is on Sunday the 17th of June, we have Junior and Handicap races from 14.00 with the Club open to the public to watch the racing.

The Summer Cup/ Novice race series is 6 races, 4 to count where novice racers can get advice on racing and help from the Safety boats when racing to build their confidence.

Our first Cup race is the Joan Doble Cup which is a down river all in dinghy handicap race. Next is the Kingfisher Cup Race which is an all in handicap race including yachts that get a 10% bonus, this is normally a longer down river race. On September 1st at 13.30 we have the Sulivan Cup which is our classic long race down to the Horse Buoy near the river mouth and back depending on wind conditions. We have Yachts, Fast and Slow handicaps with the Yachts getting 10% bonus and the slow handicap getting a shorter course. You will need to be on the water earlier for Cup races because you will be starting down river at a committee boat start line. Courses will be set and displayed on the committee boat by the OOD.

On the 28th of July to the 1st of August our annual DYC Regatta week takes place. There is Fast and Slow Handicap and possibly fleet racing depending on numbers. With 2 races a day with a total of 8 races with 6 to count it is a very friendly, fun week with good food and drink supplied by our brilliant galley team. We also have Yacht racing with 1 race a day with 3 races to count. On the last day we have fun races, Trophy races, games and prize giving.

The James Bibbings Pursuit Race is on the 25th of August, starting from 11.00 am for the slowest boats with the rest of the fleet starting at their nominated times with the fastest boat starting last. The object of the Race is for slower boats to finish the timed race before the boats starting behind them and the fast boats to catch and pass the slower boats.

If you want some intensive sailing we have the Weekend series for Fast and Slow handicap dinghies with 2 races on Saturday the 2nd July and 2 races on Sunday the 3rd July so the series is completed in one weekend. We also have the Methersgate series for Fast and Slow handicap dinghies with committee boat starts at Methersgate Quay area. Remember to get on the water early for this series as the starts are down river.
