Social Sailing
This is the umbrella term for organised non-racing events at the club such as our “On the Water” sessions and “Down-River Flotillas”. Both are an opportunity for sailors to enjoy the waters of the River Deben in a relaxed, supportive and friendly environment.
Float your boat
Float Your Boat sessions are for adults and youngsters who may have done a beginners or improvers course but not felt confident about sailing on their own or those who want to enjoy relaxed sailing (rather than racing) but would like the support of other sailors and safety cover.
The sessions are designed to be fun and include games, mini races and outings along the river. The content depends on what sailors want or need help with. There is a DYC Float Your Boat WhatsApp group which members can use to suggest what might help them.
If a sailor is unsure about sailing on their own will try to find someone to sail with them. Members can invite a guest to sail with who will be made a member for the day (for insurance reasons) at no charge.
If youngsters sailing without parents then parents will be required to sign them in and encouraged to remain at the club during the session but not obliged to do so. Each child should have an adult on the water looking out for them.
Down-River Flotilla Sailing
For the more adventurous, why not try a “Flotilla” event? Subject to weather conditions, a fleet of dinghies will travel together down-river, aiming to stop at Waldringfield or an alternative picnic spot for a break. We usually take a packed lunch/snack and maybe have a drink at the Maybush pub. It’s a fully supported environment with safety boat teams on hand to help when needed. However, we do ask that sailors are sufficiently competent to sail independently and come prepared to be out on the water for some time. These sessions are not intended for training purposes, but flotillas are a great way to see more of the river and improve your confidence on the water.
Club Boats
Club boats can be pre-booked for use in Float Your Boat, and Flotilla sessions. Information on the boats available and the booking process can be found under the Club Boat Hire section.
