Social Sailing
Social sailing is the umbrella term for organised non-racing events at the club such as “Club Sailing” and “Flotilla Sailing”. Both are an opportunity for sailors to enjoy the waters of the River Deben in a relaxed, supportive and friendly environment.
Club Sailing
Club Sailing days are for people who want to get out on the water for pure enjoyment or to hone their skills without the pressure of being in a race. Safety Boat teams are on hand to help when needed and there will also be someone on the ramp to assist with rigging and launching if needed.
“Club sailors” are asked to be at the club at least 30 minutes before the published start (launching) time in order to get changed and rigged, and ready for the briefing which will take place before launching. Sessions will normally take place in the area between “the island” and the clubhouse. Whether you have just taken an RYA course for beginners or are an improver returning to the water, you will be supported by the safety boat teams and more experienced sailors to help improve your sailing skills at these sessions. You can take part either in your own boat or hire one of the club boats.
A number of “Club Sailing” sessions this year will take place alongside the organised Evening races. There will still be dedicated help at the launching ramp but it will be an opportunity for those who are curious about racing to see what takes place and maybe join in once confident enough to do so.
Flotilla Sailing
For the more adventurous, why not try a “Flotilla” event? Subject to weather conditions, a fleet of dinghies will travel together downriver aiming to stop at Waldringfield or alternative picnic spot for a break. We usually take a packed lunch and maybe have a drink at the Maybush pub. Like Club Sailing, it’s a fully supported environment with safety boat teams on hand to help when needed. However, we do ask that sailors are sufficiently competent to sail independently and come prepared to be out on the water for some time. These sessions are not intended for training purposes but flotillas are a great way to see more of the river and improve your confidence on the water.
Club Boats
Club boats can be pre-booked for use in both Club Sailing and Flotilla sessions. Information on the boats available and the booking process can be found under the Club Boat Hire section.
